Petrolia School

District #8 (formerly Joint District #4 -1869)

Town of Scio, Allegany County, NY

Photo #1 below is shared with us from it's original owned by Dick Fitch of Bolivar, NY, whose Mother, Kate Woodard, is shown in photo and is the teacher standing in white dress near the building corner.

The district numbers apparently changed through the years.  The 1869 Atlas of Allegany County shows this area as "Joint District #4, which joins Wellsville #4.  This photograph of Kellogg shows the school as Scio District #8.

If you can furnish information on the school history or the students attending, please email: RON TAYLOR

The date of this Kellogg Studio Portrait was either 1913 or 14 since those are the two years that Kate Woodard taught there.  The schoolhouse is the building in center of photo with a Church at the right.  In 2007 the school building is a dwelling and the Church is Fire Hall.

Photo #2 below, is Owned & Submitted by Eleanor Kruger Cott, person on the far right in the photo.  As visibile, the year was 1945-'36 and Fish was the Photographer of this photo, as well as many of the area schools in the same time period, including Allentown School.

At 1st publication of above photo, the only known name of student is Eleanor Kruger-Cott, front far right.

Assistance of names is needed.  Email: RON TAYLOR
