Town of Angelica

Allegany County, NY

Baroness Anne-Marguerite-Henriette Hyde de Neuville c.1779-1849,

painted this watercolor attributed to 1808 which belongs to the New York Historical Society.  It is written that she was a friend of the widow of Hubert D’Autremont, Countess Marie and could well have visited Allegany county, NY.  If she painted at Angelica, Could this house be the famed "white house" built by the Church family, the white framed house that preceded the Belvidere Villa?

This watercolor and many others can be viewed online at the NY Historical Society website "e-museum" at the following address:

Curatorial Remarks:
A charming view of a farmhouse and adjacent buildings near a stream. It may represent a scene at Angelica in Allegany County (or Newark Valley near Owego in Tioga County, New York).

The above building picture appeared for a month on the home page of this website with a request for someone to submit a story of the history.  It is a unique little building and should be identified with proper dedication.

As of date nobody from the Angelica area has taken enough interest to document the building.

The photo was submitted by a viewer from Syracuse.  The following was received from a friend in Andover:

"In 1971 the Angelica Booster purchased the "The Little Building" and started restoring it. They finished it in 1972. It was previously used as a shop, telephone exchange, law office and a real estate office. "

Gerrie Evans Raw reports that Al Green, now deceased, stated many years ago:  “My mother, [Martha Bingham], before she married James Green in 1915, worked as a telephone operator in Angelica, at the very small building on Main Street; it is still there.” Al Green, son.

If you can supply a more complete historical story about the building, email it to: Ron Taylor, Webmaster, and it will be published to accompany this picture.
