OBITUARY
Portville Woman
Passes Away
PORTVILLE — Mrs. Anna
Johnson Gustafson, sixty-seven,
died Thursday evening (June 11,
1942) at seven forty-five o'clock
at the Olean General Hospital.
She had been in ill health for
five years.
Mrs. Gustafson was born in
Finland September 6, 1874. She
was united in marriage to August
Gustafson at Renovo, Pa., September
21, 1898. Mr. Gustafson died
three years ago.
Surviving are three daughters,
Mrs. LeMur Ferrington, Mrs.
Howard Brooks and Mrs. Howard
DeGroff, all of Portville; two
sons, Irvin Gustafson Bradford,
Pa., and Edwin Gustafson. Duke
Center, Pa, and six grandchil-
dren.
Funeral services will be held
Sunday afternoon (June 14, 1942)
at two-thirty o'clock at the home
of Mrs. Ferrrington. The Rev. L.
M Casler, pastor of the Obi
United Brethren Church, will of-
ffciate and burial will be in the
West Clarksville
Cemetery.

Services For Mrs. Annis
Beckwith, Hinsdale,
At Obi Church.
Funeral services for Mrs. Anuis
Beckwith, Hinsdale, who passed
away Friday at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Altha J. Windsor
Hinsdale, were held at the home at one-thirty
o'clock at the United Brethren,
Church, Obi, at
two-thirty o'clock,
the Rev. W. L. Cassier officiating.
Burial was in West Clarksville
Cemetery.
Glenn Loveridge, Cuba, sang
"Softly And Tenderly Jesus Is
Calling" and the Reitz Brothers of
Obi sang, "He Is Near, Ever
Near".
Pall-bearers were four grand-
sons, M. Edward Windson, Lee E.
Windson, Donald Beckwith, and
Harley Beckwith. and two grand-
nephews, Albert Wixson, and Carl
Wixson.
Mrs. Beckwith was born iu
Wayne, N, Y., September 16, 1841,
second daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Moses Wixson. When a small child
her parents moved to a farm in the
town of West Clarksville. Here
she went to school and later at-
attended Alfred College. She taught
school until 1860 when she was
united in marriage to Clark H.
Beckwith on October 24. To this
union were born one daughter, Altha,
and three sons, Arthur, Homer
and Ralph.
Surviving are: daughter, Mrs.
Altha J.. Wiudson, Hinsdale; sister,
Mrs. Edith Ballard, Syracuse;
brother, Julius Wixson, Oakland,
Calif.; six grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
During the Civil War she resumed
her teaching in Oil City,
Pa. After Mr. Beckwith's return
from the war they purchased a
farm in Obi where she lived until
a few years ago after her hus-
band's death.
Mrs. Beckwith was a lifelong
member of the Obi United Brethren
Church having been superintendent
of the Sunday School for
thirty years. She was a member
of Olean Women's Relief Corps
and Hinsdale Women's Christian
Temperance Union. Although
ninety-two years of nge, Mrs.
Beckwith could quote fluently any
passage from the Bible.

OBITUARY
AUGUST GUSTAFSON died sud-
denly at his home in Gleason
Hollow on Saturday evening.
He was born October 8, 1872
in Sweden. He was a resident
of Portville for thirteen years,
coming here from Clarksville.
Besides his wife. Anna Tors
Gustafson, he is survived by two
sons. Irwin at home and Edward
of Duke Center. Pa., three
daughters, Mrs. Lamur Ferring-
ton of Obi. Mrs. Howard Brooks
of Portville and Mrs. Howard
DeGroff of Portville, and five
grandchildren, two sisters. Mrs.
Marie Iswason of Jamestown.
N. Y., Mrs. Anna Shablon of
Wellsboro, Pa. The funeral services
will be held at the home
on Wednesday afternoon at twothirty
o'clock. The Rev. Homer
C. Evans of the Methodist Episcopal
Church will officiate and
the interment will be in West
Clarksville Cemetery.

OBITUARY
Mrs.Elma Congdon
Cuba, April 2.—Mrs. EIma Eliza-
beth Congdon died at her home in
West Clarksville, south of this vil-
lage, on Wednesday afternoon at
one 'o'clock, following an illness of
two weeks.
Mrs. Congdon wns born at West
Clarksrille, November 20, 1846, and
was the daughter of Calvin and
Mary Esther Keller. On September
30, 1865 she was married to Mar-
cus Congdon of West Clarksvllle.
She is survived by two daughters,
Mrs. Victor Hammond of
Marietta, Ohio, and Mrs. Harvcy
McIntyre of West Clarksville:
three sons. Cassins, Dean and Anson
C'ongdon of We«t C!arksville:
one sister, Mrs. Agnes Phelps of
Washington, D.C.; three brothers,
Fred Keller of Lawrenceville, III..
Frank Keller of North Tonawanda
and J. W. Keller of Binghamton:
twelve grandchildren and seven

Clarksville on Saturday afternoon

Mrs. Ivan Thurston
(Mary Ann Edwards Thurston)
The sister of a Wayland resident, Mrs. Ivan Thurston of West Clarksville, died Saturday (Oct. 30, 1976) in Cuba Hospital.
Mrs. Thurston, who was born in Greenwood, was the sister
of Mrs. Sybil Brown of Wayland. She lived in West Clarksville for the past 50 years.
Surviving are her husband, Ivan; a son, Elmer of Wellsville; three daughters, Mrs. Wilbur Horton of Hornell, Mrs. Glenn Harris of Bolivar and Mrs. Mary Lu Peterson of Allegany; two other sisters,
Mrs. Esther Short of Cuba and Mrs. John Muchler of Hornell; a brother, Lynn Edwards of California; 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grand-children and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted Monday in Bolivar. Burial was in West Clarksville Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Smith

Cuba, April 20.-Mrs. Mary
Smith, for seventy-five years a
resident of Clark.sville. south of
of this village, died Mondav morning
at nine o'clock at the home of
Mrs. W.E. Burr of Clarksville,
following an illness of txvo weeks.
Mrs. Smith was born in Stonin-
gton, Conn., in 1835, a daughter
of Mary and Cyrus Pcckham.
In 1853, she was united in marriage
to Anson Congdon of Clarks-
ville. Five children were orn to
the union, all of whom died in
early infanc. Mr. Congdon died
February 23, 1890. Mrs. Cong-
don was united in marriage in
1896 to John Smith of Clarks-
villle.
She is survivcd by one niece.
Mrs. Frank Windsor of Cuba, and
several grandnieces and nephews.
Funeral services xvill be held
at the Baptist church in West
Clarksville at 2:30 o'clock Wed-
ncsday afternoon. The Rev. Stephen
Custard xvill officiate. Burial
will be in West Clarksville
cemetery.

OBITUARY
Mrs. May Brown Mortimer, wife of
Frederick G. Mortimer, the well
known merchant of West Clarksville,
died of cancer, in the Cuba Hospital,
aged 54. The funeral was conducted
at her late home by Rev. Lincoln of
the U. B. church in which she was a
faithful worker. Burial in the
Clarksville cemetery.

MRS. EVA CHILDS,
widow of
Nathan Childs, died at the home
of Orson Childs of Daggett Hol-
low. West Clarksville, Sunday
evening at eight-fifteen o'clock.
at the age of eighty-three, after a
long illness. She is survived
by one son, Alfred Childs of West
Clarksville; two daughters. Mrs.
Fred Foster of West Clarksville
and Mrs. James Hormer of
Olean; twenty-one grandchild-
en. forty-seven great-grandchildren
and one great-greatgrandchild.
The funeral services
will be held Wednesday after-
noon, with prayer service at two
o'clock at the home of Orson
Childs and a service at tw
thirty o'clock at the U. B.

Walter A. Updyke
Funeral Is Held
WEST CLARKSVILLE — Fu-
neral services for Walter Allen
Updyke of this place were held
Sunday afternoon (January 28,
1945) at two o'clock at the late
Home and at two-thirty o'clock
at the West Clarksville Baptist
Church. The Rev. Albert White-
head officiated. Prayer was said
by the Rev. C. C. Kennedy of
Olean.
Pallbearers were D. G. Perkins
M. W. Lewis, Claude Kingsbury,
G. D. Jack, S. D. Lamb and B.
D. Thayer. Burial was in West
Clarksville Cemetery.
Mr. Updyke, fifty-nine years
old, died Thursday (January 25
1945) at three-fifty o'clock at the
Cuba Memorial Hospital follow-
ing nine days' illness.
He was born February 14, 1885,
at Sullivan Township, Tioga
County, Pa., son of Herman and
Julia C. Updyke. He had resided
on his farm here for thirty-six
years. His wife, Mrs. Laura R.
Updyke, died January. 12, 1944.
Surviving, are three daughters,
Miss Louise Updyke and Miss
Marion Updyke, at home, and
Mrs. Gerald Beach of Olean; two
brothers, Colin B. Updyke of El-
mira and Elmer Updyke of
Mainesburg, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs.
Ray Smith of Sylvania, Pa., .-and
Mrs. Clyde Richmond
of Clarksville.
Among those attending the funeral
were friends from Richburg,
Friendship, Cuba and Olean.

W. W. Windsor
Walter Watson Windsor, fifty-
seven years old, died at 3:50
o'clock this morning at his home,
696 Garden avenue. He was born
in Larabee, May 13, 1868, and
had lived in Olean for the last
seven years. He had resided in
West Clarksville and vicinity for
a number of years. Mr. Windsor
was a member of the Peoples'
Methodist Episcopal church, Cuba
Lodge, I. O. O. F., and Olean Carpenters
Union.
He is survived by his widow,
Mrs. Edna Greely Windsor, one
daughter, Dessie Windsor, of
Coudersport, and two brothers,
F. A. Windsor of Cuba, and W.
E. M. Windsor of Friendship,, and
one sister, Mrs. Ada R. Moses of
Port Allegany.
Funeral services will be held
at the late home at one o'clock
Saturday afternoon and at 2:30
o'clock at the First Baptist
church in West Clarksville. The
Rev. W. J. Harrington of the
Peoples' Methodist Episcopal
church, will officiate. Burial will
be in West Clarksville cemetery.

Funeral services for William E.
M. Windsor were held Wednesday
afternoon. Prayer service was conducted
at 1:30 o'clock by the Rev.
Robert Starks of the Maplehurst
Baptist Church and at 2 o'clock in
the Baptist Church with the pastor
of the church officiating, assisted
by the Odd Fellows of Hinsdale and
Olean Lodge, 471.
Mrs. Robert Starks sang two
vocal numbers, "Beautiful Isle of
Somewhere", and "Good Night
Down Here and Good Morning Up
There." Interment was in the West
Clarksville Cemetery. The Masonic
Order with D. M. Todd, Allegany
Lodge, 225, F. and A. M, officiating
at the committal service.
For the past 30 years, Mr. Windsor
had been a member of the Coudersport
Consistory and of F. and
A. M., 252, Olean. He was also a
member of I. O. O. F, 471, Olean,
and Hinsdale Rebekah Lodge. He
had been a retired Pennsylvania
Railroad man since April, 1927.
