GLOVER FAMILY OBITUARY COLLECTION: William Glover of Hull, Yorkshire,  England and Burns, Allegany Co., NY and his descendants

by Harold Ross Glover and Robert Harold Glover

***** WILLIAM GLOVER --first of Glover family to migrate from England

to Allegany Co. and ANN NICHOLS KUDER GLOVER

According to Faye Clancy, Historian, Town of Burns, NY, William

Glover’s Death Record shows that he was 67 years old when he died in

Burns, NY on March 27, 1891, was buried at Doty’s Corners Cemetery,

and that he was born in England to Robert and Anna Glover.  He was

born June 22, 1823, in Hull, Yorkshire County, England according to

the Record of Family Traits by Albert Carl Glover

Obituary of William Glover

William apparently died as a result of congestive heart failure which

was brought on by the straining of a bowel movement, common for older

people with a weak heart.  William was the first known of a long list

of Glovers with a heart problem.  This includes Daphne Gelser Glover

and her sisters Martha and Theresa, and her daughters Onnolee and

Leola.  H. Ross Glover had a quadruple by-pass surgery in  1999  at

age 75, but is fine now.   Robert Harold Glover had surgery for

atrial fibrillation in 2005 at age 59, but then ran the New York City

Marathon six weeks later.

  Albert Carl Glover:

“The following account of the death of William Glover is an exact

copy of a newspaper clipping found in an old scrap book.  The date of

issue and name of paper was not in the clipping.”

This was found in a trunk owned by Daphne Gelser Glover upon her

death and passed on to H. Ross Glover.  Clipping likely from  the

Canaseraga Times.

                                     WILLIAM GLOVER

SUDDEN DEATH OF AN OLD AND RESPECTED MAN

William Glover, who lived a mile and a half east of this village on

the Burns Road, was found dead in the water closet last Friday, about

2:30 p.m.  He had left the house sometime before noon, and his

friends having missed him, and looking about found him sitting

upright and dead.  Coroner A.T. Bacon having been called, empanelled

a jury, consisting of D.H. McGibeny, S.P. Wilcox, Fayette Wadhams,

Jas. Gardner, E. P. Green and Lloyd Miller Saturday morning and went

to the residence, viewed the remains, took testimony and adjourned to

the undertaking rooms of T .G. Wooster, and at 7 p.m., convened and

took additional testimony and completed its work. Dr. W. H. Harris

was directed to make the autopsy, and assisted by his son Fay B., did

so in the afternoon.  The Dr. confined his examination to the heart

and its appendages, and testified that the heart was in an abnormal

position, being at an angle of about 40 degrees from right to left,

with the pericardium (heart case) adhered to the sternum and ribs,

and filled with water.  The adhesions were quite extensive and had

restricted the heart's action very much.  Death was instantaneous

from the water pouring in at the valves of the heart.  The finding of

the jury was in accordance with these facts.

The deceased was born in Yorkshire, England 67 years ago, came to New

York State nearly 40 years ago, his first wife having died about a

year before.  He located first at Doty's Corners, Steuben County, and

has lived in this section of the country ever since, the last 15

years having been spent in the town of Burns.  About 37 years ago he

married Mrs. Ann Kuhder, and there had been born to him 5 boys and 1

girl, all of whom are alive. The boys are Robert, John, Richard, Dell

and James, all being in this section, and Mrs. Israel Haynes, living

in Hornellsville.  Too high a compliment cannot be paid to his many

good qualities.  He was particularly cheerful and always had a kind,

genial manner, which won friends wherever he sojourned. His

convictions of right was very strong, and was well sustained by

strict honesty in all his dealings with his fellow man.  Always

industrious and at work, he had worn himself out too early.  He

became connected with the M.E. church something more than 20 years

ago, and bore himself all these years so as to honor his Christian

profession.  In his death the community has lost a good neighbor and

upright citizen; the children a kind father; and the wife a devoted,

loving husband.

The funeral was largely attended at his late residence on Sunday, and

his remains laid to rest in the cemetery at Doty's Corners.  The

family, though suddenly bereft of a loved one, have an example in his

life which should cause an abundant of hope of a blessed immortality.

RONNIE GLOVER—son of Albert Ross Glover and Daphne Gelser Glover

Ronnie was born January 7, 1935 in Canaseraga, Allegany Co., N.Y per

his U.S. Air Force discharge papers (Jana maintains he was the only

sibling born in a hospital and in Hornell).  He died at the age of 21

on March 30, 1956 in Topeka, Kansas.

H. Ross Glover recalls his little brother’s burial service at the

Canaseraga  Cemetery:

Jack Hughes was a good friend of Dad’s.  He owned the Canaseraga Inn

right across the street from their apartment. Well he was a WWII Air

Force pilot and a member of the national guard out of Niagara Falls.

He asked Dad if he wanted a ceremonial flyover of jets for the burial

service.   Dad kinda thought he was crazy and finally said ok to the

deal after some of us thought it would be good to do if it was

possible at all.  Jack said he would not only arrange it, but he

would fly the lead jet.  This all just a day or two before the

burial.  At the cemetery the pastor was nervous because he had been

told to end his talk at an exact time to coincide with the flyover.

Well nobody quite believed all this would happen in little

Canaseraga.  But sure enough, as soon as the pastor closed his bible

at the time requested, a formation of jets---with one spot missing to

signify a lost airman---swooped down just over the pine trees.  It

happened so fast Dad said:  “Where’d they go?”   Someone

jokingly said: “To Florida to turn around.”   Well, a few minutes

later they roared by again, causing quite a stir in Canaseraga.

Probably the only time in history that ever happened in that little

town.

IVAN “CHIEF” McCOLL

As a longtime community leader, Chief’s death was major news in

Nunda.   A feature story, complete with his photo and the photo he

took as a 19-year old in 1945 of the atomic bomb test, appeared in

the Feb 26, 1998 edition of the Clarion News:

“One of Nunda’s prominent citizens, Ivan James “Chief” McColl,

died Feb. 5 after a battle with recurring prostate cancer.

Born Dec 1, 1926, the son of H. Donald McColl, the Nunda chief of

police, from whom young James inherited the moniker “Chief.”

An itinerant businessman, Chief devoted more than 50 years of his

life to various automotive-related ventures. Chief served 25 years on

the Nunda Village Board, which included three 4-year stints as mayor,

where he oversaw some landmark public works projects.

As noteworthy as these activities may be, the most momentus events of

Chief’s life took place before his twentieth birthday. He had a

front row seat as a witness to the greatest man-made destructive

events ever to take place on the surface of the planet.  As an aerial

photographer in the Army Air Corps, Chief recorded the atom bomb

tests conducted in the summer of 1945 in the Pacific.

Chief enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps April 16, 1945 in

Rochester, NY.  The front page of a now-yellowed copy of the Nunda

News of May 31, 1946 contains a photo of Pvt. McColl along with an

army press service release saying that he is involved with the tests

of the atomic bomb in the Marshall Islands.  McColl’s “…unit is

faced with one of the greatest photographic missions yet attempted by

the air forces.”

Another contemporary photograph shows Chief with his camera literally

smoking, shortly after his B-29 returned from an atomic test mission.

Chief apparently could not resist the temptation of smuggling home

one souvenir, which remained hidden in a duffel bag and unspoken of

until the late 1960s. It is one of the photographs he took:  a

mushroom cloud at Bikini Island, showing battleships and destroyers

being tossed about like they were flakes of straw in the wind.

In 1947, McColl was discharged and returned home, which was now

Geneseo, since Donald McColl had been elected Livingston County

Sheriff.  In December, 1947 he married Audrey Glover of Canaseraga.

James found work as a mechanic in Wakley’s garage on Main Street.

Three years later he and Audrey returned to Nunda, where James leased

and operated a Kendall Station on State Street.  A son Reverdy was

born in 1952.

At this point, documentation of Chief’s career becomes rather

complex.  He was a restless man, always eager to try out some new

business venture. Until he finally settled on Gibbs Street in Nunda

in 1978, Audrey recalls that the family lived in nearly 20 different

locations, many in Nunda, but also in Canandaigua, Dansville, and

Conesus Lake.

Over the next four decades Chief was a Ford salesman at the

Tunningley dealership, returned to the Kendall station, formed a

partnership selling Kendall motor oil and other automotive products

to service stations throughout the region, built the car wash on

State Street, opened a snowmobile and lawn & garden shop, moved up

the street to the Esso (later Sunoco) garage, sold cars for Jerry

Douglass and started his own used car dealership.

Indeed, many of these enterprises were carried on simultaneously.

Reverdy recalls a period in the early 1970s when the family operated

the Kendall station, the car wash, the snowmobile business and his

mother’s fabric shop.

Even with all this activity, Chief still made time for hobbies, which

included his study of local Indian lore.  He possessed a great

knowledge of archeology.  Chief was also an avid golfer and

fisherman, always making one or two walleye treks to Lake Erie each

year.

In 1988 Reverdy took over the Sunoco station and garage while Chief

moved to his used car lot next door.  However, last year Chief again

took charge at the station, operating it from January to June of 1997.

In contrast to his business career, Chief’s career in public service

was an outstanding example of stability.  He served continuously on

the Nunda Village Board from 1960 until 1984.  In 1963 he defeated

incumbent Mayor Ken Willard (who was later a state senator).  As

mayor, Chief was the prime mover behind a major public works project

which replaced the village’s primitive spring-fed water tanks with

an impoundment reservoir and filtration plant, and revamped the water

mains throughout the village, finally providing a connection for

every household. In a third term as mayor on the 1970s, Chief led the

movement to build the village sanitary sewer system, freeing the

community from what were becoming increasingly unhealthful septic

systems.  Also during this decade, Chief helped bring about the

expansion of the Nunda Fire Department, with new equipment and the

larger facility behind Village Hall.

Audrey recalls, “Whenever they made Chief mayor, you knew something

big was about to happen.”
