Wellsville Daily Reporter - June 4, 1901

Peter Elflein

Was Once the Famous Proprietor of The German American Hotel

A former well known resident of Wellsville and of late years, living at Cohocton, died at Hornellsville early this morning of gangrene at the St. James Hospital where he was under treatment.

Mr. Elflein was 71 years of age and is survived by a widow, living at Cohocton and one daughter, Mrs William Rogers of Hornellsville.  Undertaker Earl D. Jones of this city was notified and went to Hornellsville on Erie Train 9 to take charge of the remains which were removed to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Rogers.  The remains will be brought to Wellsville on Thursday for interment and the funeral will either be held Thursday or Friday.

Peter Elflein was probably one of the best known persons in this vicinity.  He came here early in the 60’s and his German American Hotel at the corner of Loder and Genesee Streets became famous through the genial and jolly spirit shown by its proprietor.

He retired from the hotel business about six years ago, but his friends who were legion will never forget the good old German’s hospitality.
